The Triathlete office has been buzzing in anticipation of trying Honey Stinger’s newest waffle flavor: chocolate. And it did not disappoint.
Honey Stinger, which makes honey-based nutrition products such as protein bars, energy chews and energy gels, is co-owned by Lance Armstrong, who was the first to suggest a honey-based waffle (and whose photo greets you on every waffle package).
The waffle is based on traditional “stroopwafels,” small waffles made in the Netherlands and Belgium with syrup and popular among European cyclists for providing a quick energy boost. Instead of using syrup, Honey Stinger made its waffles with organic honey (the waffles are certified USDA Organic). Chocolate joins the three other waffle flavors: original, vanilla and strawberry.
The waffles contain 160 calories, with a mix of sugars, 80 mg of sodium and 9 grams of fat. We found the waffles are a welcome treat while riding. Of this particular flavor, testers said, “It tastes like a chocolate Teddy Graham.” The chocolate flavor has the same texture as the other waffles, and it has a subtle chocolate flavor. One particular Honey Stinger waffle fan said, “It tastes exactly how I thought it would.”
Honey Stinger chocolate waffles are available for $1.39 at Honeystinger.com.
