Bonk Breaker, which is known for its energy bars and protein bars, has launched a product in a new category: energy chews. Bonk Breaker chews are made with organic ingredients—including tapioca syrup and sugar—and are available in two flavors: orange tangerine (caffeine-free) and strawberry (with 50 milligrams of caffeine per serving). The Triathlete staff got a first taste of the new chews.

Of the two flavors, taste testers preferred the orange tangerine for its uniqueness, though testers found neither flavor had an aftertaste (and there was zero caffeine bitterness in the strawberry flavor, which has caffeine derived from white tea). Both flavors tasted more like a fruit snack than an energy chew, which is probably why the company is marketing the chews as not only a source of easily digestible energy during workouts but also a healthy snack for kids. The texture is great—it’s not too hard to chew. Our only complaint is that we had a hard time getting the package open, so during workouts, it’s easiest to open the pouch before you start.

Nutrition-wise, the chews are a solid choice—each pouch contains two four-chew servings. In each serving are 90 calories, 24 grams of carbohydrate, 120 milligrams of electrolytes (sodium and potassium) and 100 percent of your daily value of vitamin C.

$2.50 per packet, Bonkbreaker.com
