Louis Garneau Energy Gel, $1.49

Louis Garneau’s new energy gel marks the quality cycling gear company’s foray into sports nutrition. Available in six flavors, the gel, made of natural ingredients, contains 100 calories, a mix of complex and simple sugars, more than 75 mg of electrolytes and vitamins C and E. The concord grape/apple flavor was deliciously sweet and fruity—like grape candy—and was the thickest of the three gels we tested, so you’ll want to have some water handy. Louisgarneau.com

First Endurance EFS Liquid Shot, $5.99

Kona-mocha (no caffeine here) is the newest flavor of EFS Liquid Shot. The gel has a texture and thickness similar to caramel, with a sweet coffee flavor. A refillable 5-ounce pop-top flask contains 400 calories, more than 1,500 mg of electrolytes, a mix of sugars plus amino acids. With no gelling agents, it has a lower viscosity than the other gels tested. Also available in vanilla and wild berry. Firstendurance.com

Vitalyte Chia Surge, $1.75

Sports drink brand Vitalyte now offers a unique energy gel that includes 2,000 mg of whole chia seeds, which are rich in recovery-promoting amino acids. Available in raspberry and pineapple-orange flavors, the 75-calorie gel contains 48 mg of electrolytes per 1.3-ounce packet. Testers likened the experience of eating the fruit-flavored, seed-filled gel to chewing a raspberry. Vitalyte.com
