Stryd Next Gen

If you’ve been a big fan of training with power on the bike—using fully objective data independent of terrain, conditions, physiological effects, etc—then training with power on the run is the logical next step.

For access to all of our training, gear, and race coverage, plus exclusive training plans, FinisherPix photos, event discounts, and GPS apps, sign up for Outside+.

Particularly useful for those who like to run off-road or on hilly terrain, Stryd’s tiny running power meter device provides real-time feedback via a compatible Bluetooth smartwatch or smartphone, letting you know exactly how much effort you’re putting out. Stryd Next Gen, the latest version, clips on to the wearer’s shoes and wirelessly detects running dynamics like cadence, power, stride length, efficiency, and leg spring, but it also now computes the effect of wind resistance on the athlete. This helps runners understand the impact of drafting, how much work they’re actually putting into a headwind, and how a tailwind affects their pace. While Stryd is an excellent training tool, long-course athletes would do well to use this device for maintaining actual proper pace on race day—helping take into account all outside factors.
