The emergence of the hydration vests has given triathletes a lot more versatility when it comes to carrying fluids and nutrition for long runs. Here are five of our favorites.
Arc’teryx Norvan 7 Hydration Vest
Designed specifically for trail runners, the unisex Norvan 7 is built for longer distance with a main compartment that holds a 2-liter bladder (included) and four front mesh pockets for tucking additional flasks or fuel. This lightweight vest (255g unloaded) also features a weather-resistant storage bag and back mesh pockets.
Hoka Race Vest 8L
Available in all sizes for men and women, this hydration vest was designed for Hoka athletes competing at the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc. Although branded by Hoka, the pack was developed in partnership with running specialists Nathan and features two front hydration pockets with a hidden kangaroo pouch in back for a third flask (three 18-ounce insulated soft flasks included).
Inov-8 Race Ultra Pro 2in1 Vest
If you’re looking for versatility with multiple storage options, this 2in1 hydration vest fits the bill. With a 10-liter pocket that can be attached or removed, this vest can be maxed out for beast mode or stripped down (two .5-liter flasks, included) for shorter work. Fully loaded (minus gear and fluid), the 2in1 weighs in at 345 grams making it the heftiest in this class.
Ultimate Direction Halo Vest
Touted as stealthy and ultra-comfortable, the Halo hydration vest is endorsed by ultrarunner Jason Schlarb and promises the best volume-to-weight ratio in its class (175g/pack only). Made of mesh, nylon, and sturdy stretch tech denim, the Halo can carry up to 10 liters of fluid for long distance (equipped with two 500ml soft bottles; reservoir sold separately). Available in men’s and women’s sizing.
Salomon Agile 2 Set Hydration Vest
Built for trail runners, the minimalist unisex Agile 2 Set doesn’t hold as much hydration—two 1.1-liter soft flasks—as some of the other hydration vests here, but its lightweight mesh construction (170 grams unloaded) means it’s less noticeable during workouts. There’s enough room for a phone, keys, and cards, and it’s available in an array of colors—including high visibility—with reflective details for safety.
