Polar Vantage M

Though you may be able to find smartwatches for cheaper, the Vantage M is by far the best bargain for anyone looking to get something multisport-specific that won’t require an upgrade as your training/recovery/data nerdery becomes more advanced.

For access to all of our training, gear, and race coverage, plus exclusive training plans, FinisherPix photos, event discounts, and GPS apps, sign up for Outside+.

Boasting countless sports and activities already built in, the big selling point on this Polar Vantage M (this is no step counter…) is its ability to analyze and interpret large amounts of data before providing some real coaching advice through the Polar app.

Expect super high-end heart rate reading capabilities on this wrist-based monitor (also compatible with even more accurate chest straps), while the GPS is consistent (important always) but not the most accurate (important sometimes). While the next Polar model up may do some very cool things with recovery and running with power, 99% of triathletes will never hit the ceiling of what the Vantage M can do: open-water swimming, pool swimming, biking with power/cadence/speed with accessories, and great running metrics, alongside triathlon/multisport mode for race or brick days. Trust us, you won’t find more for less anywhere.
