Valued at more than $1,000, the gear bag given to participants of the spring 2015 Triathlete Magazine Training Camp, kicking off today in San Diego, is filled with the editors’ favorite products. The bag will have campers prepared to take on five days of swim, bike and run training with the magazine’s editors and top-level professional triathletes, including Jesse Thomas, Heather Jackson, and Trevor and Heather Wurtele.
For the swim
The gear bag campers will be receiving is a TYR Apex Transition Backpack ($100, Tyr.com), as featured in the 2015 Triathlete Buyer’s Guide. It has a drawbridge-style opening for easy access, multiple mesh pockets and a convenient, protected laptop sleeve. Campers will also get to experience the benefits of training with XTERRA Wetsuits’ Lava Pants ($150, Xterrawetsuits.com), a ¾-length neoprene pant, which is a great tool for simulating correct body position while swimming without having to wear a wetsuit. Triathlete staffers also love the Aqua Sphere Kayenne goggles ($28, Aquasphereswim.com) for open-water swimming, and the Aqua Sphere ErgoFlex Paddles ($20) to aid pool training.
For the bike
The Swiss cycling brand Assos is known for its high-quality cycling apparel, and the company is outfitting campers with its new cycling shorts—the Assos H.milleShorts_s7 for men ($179, Assos.com) and the H.laalalaiShorts_s7 for women ($189), which are ideal for warm summer or indoor riding thanks to their lighter volume and fabric. Campers will spend some time riding this week with four-time Wildflower Long Course champion Jesse Thomas, and Assos Chamois Crème and Assos superLeggera Socks_s7 will keep them extra comfortable for hours in the saddle. The XLAB Gorilla Rear Bottle Cage ($59.95, Xlab-usa.com) will keep campers hydrated during rides by preventing bottles from launching with its tall gripping sides. Campers might also want to throw on some Triathlete-branded arm warmers for chilly morning rides along the coast.
For the run
Each camper will receive two sleek-looking watches from Soleus—men will be receiving the Soleus GPS Pulse + HRM watch ($229, Soleusrunning.com), which features a built-in heart rate monitor, and the chrono Soleus Contender watch ($65). Women will be receiving the Soleus GPS mini watch ($99), made to fit on more petite wrists, and the brightly colored Soleus Chicked watch ($55). Run workouts will be made more comfortable with the new Asics Kayano Single Tab socks ($14, Asicsamerica.com).
Campers will be ready to fuel (and recover from) their five days of workouts with some of the Triathlete editors’ favorite nutrition products. First Endurance’s new EFS-PRO drink mix ($40.95, Firstendurance.com), which delivers 1400 milligrams of electrolytes in a drink with a lower osmolality and lighter taste (cucumber water flavor). Campers can also fuel workouts with Nuun Active and Energy electrolyte tablets, from the Nuun Original Mixed 4-Pack ($24, Nuun.com), Nuun People for Bikes 4-Pack ($24) and tubes of Nuun Energy ($6.50 each), which provide essential electrolytes in great-tasting flavors. After workouts, First Endurance Ultragen ($44.95) delivers 20 grams of protein in a delicious cappuccino flavor. Other tasty nutrition products campers can try include Bonk Breaker Energy Chews, CLIF Bars, PROBAR Bolt chews and GoMacro Bars.
Campers will also be receiving the latest issue of Triathlete magazine; Endurance Shield Sunscreen ($13, Enduranceshield.com), a great-smelling and light-feeling sunscreen that’s essential for San Diego workouts; a SwimLabs swim stroke video analysis; a Moji Mini PRO Massager ($30, Gomoji.com), one of our favorite travel-friendly recovery tools; an Asics Cinch Sackpack ($25, Asicsamerica.com); and The Well-Built Triathlete book by top triathlon coach Matt Dixon ($25, Velopress.com). Campers will be renting bikes from Nytro Multisport (Nytro.com) and wetsuits from XTERRA Wetsuits (Xterrawetsuits.com).
