Shimano Introduces Dura Ace 9100

With the introduction of its new component group, Shimano has reaffirmed its position as one of the leaders of innovation and new technologies. New tech has further integrated the system, including a new power meter E-Tube wireless connectivity, a wider range drivetrain, Shimano Synchro Shift control and new triathlon-specific updates.
The new 9100 crankset improves upon the iconic Dura-Ace four-arm design, adding strength and rigidity while minimizing weight. Shimano’s Rider Tuned gearing offers a number of chainring configurations with a single bolt diameter to make picking the right gearing easy. The new crank comes in seven different lengths (165mm, 167.5mm, 170mm, 172.5mm, 175mm, 177.5mm, 180mm) and five different chainring options (50-34T, 52-36T, 53-39T, 54-42T, 55-42T.) Although not applicable to triathlon yet, the crankset is also compatible with the newest disc-brake bikes without an increase in Q-factor.
A new standout feature of the 9100 groupset is the integrated power meter that Shimano has employed into its crankset. The dual-sided strain gauges are internally hardwired together for reliable performance in all weather conditions and accurate measurement (+/- 2%) regardless of pedaling position. The new system also uses a single rechargeable battery powering the entire unit and the ability to wirelessly update firmware. The meter works on both ant+ and Bluetooth Smart protocols and is available in all of the above length and gear combinations.
The new cassette is more or less the same as previous years (alloy and titanium mix), but adds an 1130 offering to expand its Rider Tuned gearing options. The new chain that Shimano released with its group uses an asymmetric plate design, which they say greatly reduces drivetrain noise while greatly improving front and rear shift performance. One long awaited feature in the chain category is the new Quick Link Shimano has chosen to employ, providing for tool-free installation.
Shimano improves upon its industry-leading rim brake performance with redesigned Dual-Pivot and Direct Mount models that feature a sleek new design with improved stopping power and increased clearance for 28C tires. With the release, Shimano has also designed a brand new Dura Ace hydraulic disc brake system. Utilizing a lightweight and minimalistic Flat Mount design, the R9170 caliper features stopping power ideally tuned for road applications. The new rotors offer even greater heat management than Shimano’s industry-leading Ice-Tech Freeza rotors, resulting in unparalleled braking performance and reliability in the most demanding conditions.
Improving further upon its mechanical shifting, the new Dual Control Levers deliver further refined shift performance with improved ergonomics, and are available in mechanical rim brake or hydraulic disc brake configurations. Along with new shifters, Shimano has also completely redesigned the front and rear derailleurs. The front derailleur offers more cable routing options and features an integrated cable tension adjustment, eliminating the need for a barrel adjuster. The new rear derailleur features Shimano’s Shadow RD design, which gives the derailleur a lower profile and more stable operation and makes it compatible with up to a 35t cassette.
One of the standout features of the new Di2 is the implementation of Synchro Shift from Shimano’s XTR Di2. Available as a programmable Di2 option, Synchro Shift creates an intuitive experience on the bike through synchronized front and rear shifting that can be custom programmed by riders. In addition to traditional “Full” Synchro Shift, riders can optionally select “Semi” Synchro Shift. This intuitive new mode automatically reacts when the rider shifts from one chainring to another, automatically shifting the rear derailleur to minimize the gear step, thus preserving the rider’s rhythm.
All-new Di2 TT/Triathlon Dual Control Levers are also available in mechanical rim brake and hydraulic disc brake versions. Utilizing a single switch design and slimmer profile, the new TT/Triathlon shifter provides superior ergonomics and aerodynamics. The new Remote Shifter features an incredibly low-profile design with a new switch design optimized for hand positioning on the extensions.
Along with enhanced Di2 functionality, expanded E-Tube wire options and junction boxes, and the new Wireless Unit deliver improved wiring configurations and wireless connectivity to Shimano’s E-Tube Project.
Featuring all-new wider rim shapes and new rim depth options, OPTBAL spoke system and Shimano’s proven hub technology, the new wheel range offers expanded wheelsets for both rim and disc brakes. All-new C60 and C40 rim profiles offer an ideal balance of aerodynamics and rim rigidity, available in tubular, clincher and tubeless applications.
By reexamining every aspect of their SPD-SL pedals, Shimano was able to save 24.5g while still providing the proven SPD efficiency, stability and durability.
