Technology is constantly evolving–even when it comes to simple gear like bike locks. Presenting four of our favorite choices for the best bike locks available for triathletes.
Bike lock weight: 454g
The TiGr Mini+ is an excellent alternative to the traditional u-lock, thanks to significant weight savings over other locks in its category, and admirable security. The included mounting clip makes carrying it easy—although it will take the place of a bottle cage and is not likely to fit into all frames. Note: Due to its unique dimensions, it is limited to locking frames and wheels (no helmets!). For a commuter or student planning to leave their bike unattended, this is a worthwhile choice.
Abus Granit Plus 640
Bike lock weight: 860g
The ABUS Granit Plus 640 is a compact solution for those who prefer a traditional u-lock. This lock is compact enough to fit into a rear jersey pocket, but you’ll feel it on your back due to its weight (the equivalent of about 12 Clif bars). The key’s built-in LED is a nice upgrade not found on many competitors’ locks, and robust construction makes this best suited for an extra sense of security on lunch rides or trips to the farmer’s market.
Ottolock Hexband Cinch
Bike lock weight: 190-375g
Combination locks do a great job of eliminating the need for a key—one less thing to carry and think about. The Ottolock wins for portability, rolling neatly onto itself and easily fitting into a jersey pocket or onto a bike with its available rubber mount. The newly offered Hexband version of the OttoLock offers twice the layers of steel—in addition to Kevlar—for extra peace of mind when leaving your bike out of sight for a coffee.
Hiplok Z Lok
Bike lock weight: 80g
The Z Lok is best described as a reusable zip tie with a steel core. This is an exceptionally light, grab-and-go lock with surprising durability. Its stiffness makes carrying it slightly awkward, but it’s easy to “zip” around a saddle bag for minimal intrusion. Because you can lengthen it by connecting it end-to-end and easily fit it through helmet vents, Hiplok is incredibly versatile and lightweight (equivalent of 1 Clif Bar). Available in either combo or universal-key locking mechanism.
