The draw: Discovering new circuits
Plot or uncover a new running or cycling route without any of the messy login requirements of most route-planning apps. Just open it and tap your route onto a map. If you choose to do so, it’ll automatically snap your route to roads and trails and give the distance and elevation profile—the function is perfect when traveling. You can save routes for future reference or send them to a variety of third-party apps.
The draw: Locating pools away from home
Traveling away from your home turf and need to find a nearby pool to keep up with your training schedule? SwimRadar offers a list of pools in just about any location, which can then be quickly filtered and sorted by length and type. Distance, directions, hours and contact information are available within the app. It works within the U.S. and internationally.
The draw: Detailed training analysis
No training log is used as widely as Training Peaks. And for good reason—it supports virtually every device on the market. The software goes far beyond simple “how far and how fast” stats that most sites give and dives into advanced ways to analyze performance to help triathletes take true effort into account when assessing a workout.
Bike Fast Fit
The draw: Simple fit check
When it comes to cycling, there’s no factor more important than position on the bike. While an app can’t replace a proper bike fit, Bike Fast Fit can help ensure you’re at least in the ballpark. Simply place your phone on a table and jump on your bike on a trainer and it’ll automatically check your fit angles and lengths. It’s great for ensuring your fit hasn’t changed after packing and traveling with your bike.
The draw: Universally compatible
If you’re looking for an app that can record any run and ride, whether indoors our out, Wahoo Fitness is among the best. By using GPS and connecting to both ANT+ sensors and Bluetooth Smart sensors, it’ll record your activities like most other apps. The key to this product is its ability to upload to a slew of training logs, including Garmin Connect, Training Peaks and Strava. And, if you like to analyze every detail of your training files, it’ll export files into half a dozen formats that are compatible with many tools to do so, from Microsoft Excel to WKO+.
