Maybe it was Gwen Jorgensen’s gold-medal performance in Rio. Maybe it was a drunken bet from a friend. Whatever made you want to try your first tri, we salute your choice. Presenting expert tips and 10 gear must-haves from pro Chris Foster to launch you toward multisport glory.

How to find your race: USA Triathlon sanctions well over 4,000 triathlons each year, and there are countless un-sanctioned events that are just as fun. The easiest way to find a race near you—or somewhere you’d like to visit: check out our race calendar, USA Triathlon’s list of sanctioned events or Ironman’s calendar. Then find a club close to you using a search engine like TriFind.com. A club’s website will clue you into local races and the locals who know them. From there, you’re only a workout away from finding training partners and future friends.

How to discover the best training routes: Depending on where you live, there may be dozens of trails and bike paths nearby, or there may be hundreds of miles of stoplights and highways. Make the most of your surroundings by learning up on where your fellow athletes train. Find a local tri, run, or bike group and ask where they run and where they meet to train together. You can also find routes online at websites that compile user-generated running and riding routes like MapMyRun and MapMyRide. More of an explorer? Both websites allow you to create your own routes, as does Gmap Pedometer. Google Maps also features useful walking and cycling routing functions.
