Though Ironman California was canceled due to extreme weather, plenty of racing was still to be found in the U.S. Just a few hundred miles south, the L.A. Triathlon made a triumphant return after being canceled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 60 pros competed for the $40,000 prize purse at the Olympic-distance event, along with 1,900 age-group athletes across all the events.
On the opposite coast, athletes descended on Clermont, Florida for the USA Triathlon Ultra Distance National Championship. The race was held in conjunction with the Great Floridian Triathlon Multisport Festival, known as the longest running independent ultra-distance triathlon in the country, with this year marking its 30th competition year. J.P. Dowd of Charlestown, Massachusetts and Holly Smith of Marathon, Florida were crowned overall champions, and 12 other athletes earned age-group national titles.
