It’s not every day you rack your bike next to a celebrity or Olympian in a triathlon transition area. But at the Malibu Triathlon, that’s a common occurrence. Every year, the race brings together celebrities, studios, entertainment industry corporations, pro triathletes, and everyday age-groupers to compete in its Celebrity Division, which raises funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.
Past celebrity participants have included Jennifer Lopez, Matthew McConaughey, Teri Hatcher, Mario Lopez, Jeremy Piven, Will Ferrell, Rainn Wilson, Ed Helms, Zac Efron, Robin Williams, and Ellie Kemper, to name a few. In 2021, the star power was multiplied by the Super League Triathlon series finale, also held in Malibu that same weekend. Some of the world’s best triathletes, including 70.3 World Champion Lucy Charles-Barclay and Olympic medalists Kristian Blummenfelt and Katie Zaferes, lent their speed to relay races over the weekend. Check out the photos below to see all the action in Malibu:
Olympians Kate Zaferes and Kristian Blummenfelt pose with their teammate, actor Paul Lieberstein (“The Office”) before the relay division of the celebrity race. Leiberstein is a regular at the event, recruiting fellow entertainers (including his co-stars on “The Office”) to race since 2011.
Actors Kyle Schmid (“History’s Six,” “The I-Land”) and Chace Crawford (“Gossip Girl”) strike a pose before the swim start. (“Now I just need some ice cream and a chiropractor,” Crawford said on social media after finishing first in his division.
The men’s celebrity wave kicks off at Zuma Beach.
Elite triathlete Richard Murray of South Africa completed the swim as part of a relay team with actor Caleb Foote (“Made for Love”) and two-time Olympian Rachel Klamer.
Fans and friends cheer on their favorite celebrities from the shores of Zuma Beach.
Robert Iger, Executive Chairman of the Walt Disney Company, gets ready to mount his bike as he races as part of the celebrity division at the Malibu Triathlon.
Actress Brytni Sarpy (“The Young and the Restless”) competed on a relay team with co-star Sean Dominic and filmmaker Alli Forsythe.
Singer-songwriter Ryan Cassata runs through the finish line. After the race, Cassata posted on Instagram: “We did it!!! Woke up before 3 am, got to Zuma in the dark, then we raced! Very fun day!! I ended up doing 11 min miles which was good for my first time since I only started running a few months ago! Crossing the finish line was exhilarating…I can’t even explain it.”
Actor Max Greenfield (“Veronica Mars,” “Ugly Betty,” “New Girl”) crosses the finish line at the 34th Annual Malibu Triathlon at Zuma Beach. The entertainer has participated in the race every year since 2013.
Ultra-endurance athlete and podcast host Rich Roll, Olympian Alexi Pappas, and middle-distance star Mary Cain teamed up for the relay division of the celebrity race. Cain said she was using the event as “information gathering” about triathlon.
Journalist Christina Pascucci won her division in the celebrity race. Like many celebrity participants, Pascucci returns to the event every year to raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research.
