While the 2014 Winter Olympics may be underway in Russia, the world’s top winter triathletes will take to the snow in Cogne, Italy this weekend to vie for a chance to call themselves the fastest athletes on foot, bike and skies. Elite and Under-23 world titles are up for grabs over a 6km run, 12km mountain bike and 9km ski course, with junior and paratriathletes set to battle over shortened distances of the same course at the 2014 Cogne ITU Winter Triathlon World Championships.
This is the 13th year the Winter Triathlon World Championships have been held. The first race was held in 2002 in Brusson, Italy. This year marks the second time Cogne has organized the pinnacle race for winter triathlon and the fourth time Italy has served as the host country. The northern Italian town of Cogne is home to just under 2,000 citizens and is known for its access to hiking and cross country skiing, making it an ideal location for winter triathlon.
