Alistair and Jonny Brownlee have already secured qualification for the Games, leaving one spot available in the British men’s team.

Former world U23 champion Clarke, who competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, has consistently been the third best Briton, but a phone call on Monday from men’s coach Ben Bright left him worried his efforts will not be enough unless he makes the podium in the next round of the world series, in California on May 12.

Clarke said: “‘You need to be in the top three if you want to be selected or they’ll pick someone who can help the Brownlees. [The phone call] did come as a shock.”
