Portugal’s Vanessa Ferndandes announced today that she will be taking a break from her professional triathlon career to deal with health issues.

The 26-year-old is one of the most decorated athletes currently racing on the ITU circuit. She has won several world cup events and was the silver medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Her time away from the sport means that she will not have the opportunity to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.

Fernandes commented on the decision to take a break in a local newspaper: “I know that I will get to return and this phase represents only a little break in my sports career. I hope to have all your support.”
