Manny Huerta will represent the United States of America at the 2012 London Olympic Triathlon. Huerta was born in Cuba, but his grandmother, Consuelo, fled the communist country to allow her family to start a new life in the U.S. After trying his hand at long-distance racing under TeamTbb coach Brett Sutton, Huerta found ITU racing and eventually qualified for the U.S. team at the 2012 ITU World Triathlon Series San Diego race.

Just a few weeks ago, Triathlete.com got the opportunity to follow Huerta around his training grounds on the active volcano, Irazu, in Costa Rica. Huerta and his coach sleep up high and then drive to slightly lower elevation for training. The natural blood-boosting benefits he gets at altitude have helped Huerta’s performance, and he says he will sleep well the night after the Olympic games knowing that he gave it everything he had.

Get to know Huerta and his training regime with this video and check back to Triathlete.com in the next few days for the rest of this “Training Day” series.

Watch Huerta take on the world at the Olympics on Tuesday, Aug. 7.  (Click here for the TV schedule.)
