Danish super-biker Torbjorn Sindballe announced his retirement earlier today because of an abnormal heart valve. A few of our photographers have provided photos from Sindballe’s career.

The “Great Dane”, as he is often referred to, has been competing in triathlon for 18 years, focusing on the iron-distance for the majority of that time. He made his 140.6-mile debut in 1999, finishing in 8:18:53.

While he is known primarily for his near-perfect riding postion and his record-shattering bike splits, Sindballe wasn’t too shabby at the other disciplines. His swim typically put him among the leaders, and when his run was on, Sindballe was capable of beating just about anyone. His accolades include two ITU Long-Course World Championships (2004 and 2006), but his finest performance may have been his win at the 2005 edition of Ironman California 70.3. After his usual blazing ride, Sindballe ran a 1:14 half-marathon to win the race in a then course record of 3:59:58. Another career highlight came on the Big Island in 2007, when Sindballe battled to Kona heat to a third-place showing–his best in Hawaii.

Here are a few of our best shots from one of the best cyclists we’ve ever seen…
