Former Ironman 70.3 world champ Terenzo Bozzone announced today he will not be making the start at Sunday’s Ironman World Championship 70.3 in Henderson, Nev. Bozzone was on hand for the mandatory pro meeting early this afternoon, but he ultimately decided it was not in his best interest to race. Bozzone made the announcement on his website, Terenzo.blogspot.com.

“It is with great regret that I have to announce that due a sinus infection I am going to have to pull out of the Ironman 70.3 World Champs,” he wrote. “My training has been on track and recent results have been very positive, I have been feeling very fit and strong, but I think maybe I made one too many trans-Atlantic fights; blocked ears and airways do not bode well for a fast race…”

Bozzone won the Ironman World Championship 70.3 race in Clearwater, Fla. in 2008. He struggled with injury throughout 2011, and was just finding his form toward the end of this season. Bozzone had a packed race schedule over the past few weeks, including finishes at Ironman 70.3 Brazil two weeks ago and Ironman 70.3 Ireland one week ago.

“I am desperately disappointed to have to withdraw from this race but I wouldn’t have been doing myself any favors, either in the race or longterm, to line up with such an incredible line up of pro triathletes knowing I was not going to be able to breathe properly,” he continued.
