The Tempe City Council on Thursday voted unanimously to maintain its contract through 2018 with Florida-based World Triathlon Corp., which operates the Ironman competitions.
The Ironman Arizona race attracts about 3,000 athletes and fans. An economic-impact study by the Tempe Tourism Office estimated that the race brings in nearly $5 million in revenue that includes sales taxes from money spent on shopping and restaurants and bed taxes from hotel rentals.
