American Andrew Starykowicz and Canadian Magali Tisseyre took the victories at the 34th edition of Ironman 70.3 Muncie in Indiana. Both Starykowicz and Tisseyre had dominating performances: They stayed at the front of the swim, broke away on the bike, and stayed strong on the run to take the 70.3 Muncie crowns.
In the men’s race, American Andrew Starykowicz was first out of the water in a time of 24:25, with Kiwi Callum Millward right on his heels. About 45 seconds back a pack of six men exited the water. Starykowicz took advantage of his specialty, the bike, to clock a time of 2:00:55 and build up his lead to six minutes over Indiana native Daniel Bretscher, Tyler Butterfield of Bermuda and Millward into T2. The rest of the field was 11 minutes back, so it was up to the top four men to battle for the podium. Starykowicz held on to his lead to the finish, and Butterfield used a 1:14:16 half-marathon to pull into second, and Millward took third.
In the women’s race, Kiwi Anna Cleaver was first out of the water in a time of 25:55 with Canadian Magali Tisseyre right behind. Tisseyre used her bike strength to break away—her 2:17:26 bike split gave her a six-minute lead heading into T2 over American April Gellatly; she had almost 10 minutes over Aussie Kate Bevilaqua and Cleaver. Tisseyre continued to build her lead on the run, which was up to 10 minutes halfway through the run. She held on for the win, Bevilaqua took second and Germany’s Nina Kraft made up time on the run to round out the podium.
