The drama surrounding the selection of Australia’s 2012 London Olympic team continues with the nomination of the six athletes to the team.
On the men’s side, Brendan Sexton and Courtney Atkinson join Brad Kahlefeldt (who had already been selected) to make up the men’s Olympic team for Australia. The selection of the men’s team comes as no surprise as the other main contender, Chris McCormack, announced late last week that he had not been named to the team.
On the women’s side Emma Moffatt had been selected in 2011, leaving two spots for three main contenders. At the beginning of 2012 it looked like the women’s team would be made of three Emmas, with Emma Jackson and Emma Snowsill likely rounding out the team. Beijing Olympian Erin Densham has had arguably the best 2012 season of any athlete on the ITU circuit, with wins at the World Cup race in Mooloolaba and the WTS race in Sydney, as well as a second-place finish at the WTS race in San Diego. With both Jackson and Snowsill having slow starts to the year, many believed it would be 2010 U23 World Champ Jackson who would be left off, but that was not the case. The selectors nominated Jackson and Densham to join Moffatt, leaving the reigning gold medalist Snowsill at home this August. According to Australian website Firstoffthebike.com, Snowsill has appealed the decision and the women’s team will not be officially finalized until the appeal process is over.
