Switzerland’s Ronnie Schildknecht earned his seventh victory in a row at Ironman Switzerland while Germany’s Anja Beranek took the women’s title after a disappointing Ironman European Championship race earlier this month.
Schildknecht continued his domination of his home-country race with a 55:59 swim, a 4:32:16 bike and a 3:01:59 run to take the 8:33:39 win. Spain’s Ivan Raña was faster on the swim and run, but couldn’t keep pace with Schildknecht on the bike and settled for second seven minutes later. Germany’s Per Bittner earned third thanks to a field-leading marathon time of 2:57:54.
Baranek was one of only two women to go under the one-hour mark on the 2.4-mile swim (58:21) and went on to dominate the bike (4:56:23) before cementing the win on the marathon (3:22:55). She crossed the line in 9:21:31. Switzerland’s Céline Schärer was second seven minutes later, with Hungary’s Erika Csomor claiming the final podium spot.
