Kona contenders Andreas Raelert (GER) and Mirinda Carfrae (AUS) chose to stay away from the attention surrounding today’s Ironman 70.3 World Championship and instead opted to compete at the Ironman 70.3 Muskoka triathlon in Ontario, Canada.
Canada’s Lionel Sanders out-biked Raelert and the rest of the pro field and then turned in a blazing 1:1058 half-marathon to earn the victory in 4:01:20. Raelert cruised in for second in 4:07:50, with New Zealand’s Tom Davison rounding out the podium in third.
Carfrae earned the first victory of her season and a little confidence heading into next month’s big Kona race. She swam a 27:33, biked a 2:40:18 and ran a 1:18:09 to outpace Canada’s Rachel McBride and take the win in 4:29:34. McBride easily earned second with fellow Canadian Lisa Mensink rounding out the top-three.
