Reigning ITU world champion Javier Gomez (ESP) was impressive against a tough field to earn the win and another Olympic berth. American Tommy Zaferes went after one of the U.S. Olympic team spots up for grabs and was part of the front mix for most of the race, but the effort ultimately turned out to be too much as he faded in the end. No American male placed in the top eight, leaving all spots on the U.S. Olympic team up for grabs.
