“South America has been a region of aggressive expansion for Ironman over the past 18 months and our new event in Palmas is indicative of that growth,” said Steve Meckfessel, Managing Director of Global Race Operations for Ironman. “The demand for Ironman races continues to flourish in Brazil and Palmas will be an attractive and compelling destination for our athletes and their families.”
The Ironman 70.3 South American Championship Palmas triathlon will lead athletes through a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run through the city of Palmas. The race will start at Graciosa Beach where the one-lap swim will take place. The two-loop bike course will lead athletes through an amazing landscape, including a five-mile bridge over the Tocantins River. The two-loop run will take athletes along the river and conclude back at the Graciosa Beach.
“Palmas, the Capital of Tocantins, was built 25 years ago. It is a modern city with beautiful architecture and lakefront beaches. The lake, formed by the Lajeado Hydroelectric Power Plant reservoir, is eight kilometers wide and will provide a magnificent swim for the athletes as well as great viewing areas for their families and friends,” says Carlos Galvão, race director. “We are pleased to host an Ironman 70.3 in Palmas.”
The Ironman 70.3 South American Championship Palmas will offer a $75,000 USD professional prize purse and 35 coveted age-group slots to the 2016 Ironman 70.3 World Championship taking place in Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia.
General registration will open on Dec. 17, 2015, at 10 a.m. (BRT) at Ironman.com/palmas70.3.
