Matthew Russell and Angela Axemann claimed Elite Division victories at the 2011 USAT Duathlon National Championships in Tucson/Oro Valley, Ariz., on Saturday, April 30. More than 580 athletes from 46 states competed in sunny, 70-degree conditions with light wind.

The slightly hilly course consisted of a 5K run, 35K bike and another 5K run. The day’s weather was an improvement over the day before, during which bike check-in was cancelled due to high winds.

The top finishers qualify for the ITU Short-course Duathlon World Championships, Sept. 24-25 in Gijon, Spain.
