Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong has added another race to his schedule in his quest to qualify for October’s Ironman World Championship.

Armstrong revealed his plans this afternoon via Twitter: “It has been almost 25 years but I’m excited to announce my return to St. Croix for the Ironman St. Croix 70.3. Beauty and the Beast.”

The May 6 race will be Armstrong’s third 70.3 since he announced his intentions to race in Kona. He finished second at Ironman 70.3 Panama and seventh at Ironman 70.3 Texas.

If he sticks to his original schedule (something 70.3 St. Croix was not a part of) he will race at Ironman 70.3 Florida on May 20 and Ironman 70.3 Hawaii on June 2 before taking on his first Ironman in Nice, France on June 24.

Armstrong did not explain why he added the Caribbean race to his lineup, but it could be as a means of gaining more Kona Pro Ranking points. Although there are still months of racing left before Kona slots are handed out, as of now Armstrong sits on the outside looking in.
