First-time Olympian Katie Zaferes raced to a sixth-place at last year’s Rio test event, but she realized that even more difficult than the much-talked-about 20 percent uphill grade on course was the technical downhill. To help diminish her fear, Zaferes worked with a bike specialist, her husband (and fellow pro triathlete) Tommy Zaferes and a sports psychologist to get more comfortable heading into Saturday’s race.
