Over 3,300 athletes jumped into the Hudson River this morning for New York City’s 10th annual triathlon. Today the weather was warm and humid as the triathletes raced through the city to finish in Central Park.
Men’s Race
Kyle Leto (USA) was first out of the notoriously fast point-to-point swim (12:22), which had an eight knot current this year. Sam Douglas (USA) was just 20 seconds back in 12:44, with Jordan Jones (USA) another 10 seconds behind him in 12:54. The main pack, made up of Dan McIntosh (USA), Jacob Rhyner (USA), Jake Shoemaker (USA), Sven Strijk (NED) and Nicholas Sterghos (USA), trailed Jones by only five seconds exiting the water.
On the bike, Jones blew the close race apart, biking two minutes faster than the next person – a huge gap in Olympic distance racing. His 58:16 bike split brought him into transition at the front of the race. Leto was next to finish the bike leg after a second-best 1:00:16, followed by Douglas, who biked a 1:00:51. Two minutes back were Rhyner (1:02:11) and McIntosh (1:02:19).
It all came down to the run where Jones’ lead was cut into, but he held on with a 33:53 10K run to win in 1:49:05. Leto, who took third last year, was next, holding off those charging behind him with a 34:29 run to cross the finish in 1:50:55. McIntosh used the second fastest run of the day (33:11) to take the last podium spot in 1:52:13. Rhyner’s run was 20 seconds slower (33:26) and he finished 20 seconds behind McIntosh in 1:52:37. Douglas fell back to fifth with a 35:30 run, while Shoemaker’s fastest run of the day (31:53) brought him back after a slow bike.
Women’s Race
In her third attempt at the race, Jenna Parker (USA) took home the win in dominating fashion. Parker came out of the water in a blistering 11:57, trailing hometown favorites Rebeccah Wassner (USA) and Laurel Wassner (USA) by just one second. They were over two minutes ahead of the next swimmers, Nicole Truxes (USA) in 13:07 and Florence Chretien (USA) in 13:11.
Parker’s second-best bike of the day (1:07:38) took her to the lead and she never looked back. Rebeccah Wassner was second into T2 after biking a 1:07:52. Amy Bevilacqua (USA) made up for a slower swim (14:02) and T1 on the bike with the fastest ride (1:06:02). Bevilacqua and Julie Patterson (USA), who swam a 14:00 and biked a 1:09:55, worked their way up through the fields before heading into transition.
On the run Parker secured the title with a 37:53 to finish in 2:01:50. Bevilacqua ran her way into second with a 38:26 to finish in 2:03:49. Patterson also passed a fading Rebeccah Wassner with a 38:59 run and a 2:07:31 finish, while Wassner eked out a 44:10 run to hold onto fourth place in 2:08:34. Meghan Newcomer (USA) ran a 40:54 after slower bike and swim legs to beat out Truxes by just a single second for fifth place in 2:11:39.
