More than 2,000 athletes from 40 countries will descend upon San Francisco this weekend for the annual Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. Since 1980, this race has remained virtually unchanged and every year top professional athletes and age-groupers brave the frigid water temperatures and significant waves in the Bay to participate in one of the most well-known triathlons in existence.
Swim: Triathletes will jump from a ferry at 7:30am and swim 1.5 miles back to the shores of the St. Francis Yacht Club—all participants are unloaded from the boat in less than six minutes. The water rarely reaches above 55 degrees, so Triathlete magazine recommends wearing two latex swim caps to insulate body heat. For more information on the Alcatraz swim, pick up a copy of the June issue of Triathlete. Page 70 provides an illustration of the course and offers tips to surviving this challenging swim.
Bike: After making their way back to the shore at the Marina Green Beach, triathletes will run half a mile to transition. They will then mount their bikes at the Marina Green for an 18-mile ride. The course involves a climb to Lincoln Blvd. and a climb up the hill at the Palace of the Legion of Honor. Triathletes will also bike through Golden Gate Park and make their way back into transition for the run.
Run: This eight-mile course runs through Baker Beach. Athletes will be pounding their way through deep sand and up 400 steps on the Equinox Sand Ladder. Runners will pass under the Golden Gate Bridge and back to the Marina Green to cross the finish line.
