Both athletes finish second overall in USA Triathlon Twenty-12 Elite Race.
The second leg of the 2009 USA Triathlon Twenty-12 Elite Race Series is in the books, with U.S. athletes Kevin Collington and Hayley Peirsol each finishing second in their respective races at the ITU Austin Pan American Cup in Austin, Texas on Monday.
The races were part of the annual Capital of Texas Triathlon.
Kate McIlroy of New Zealand won the women’s race in 1:56:04, edging Peirsol by 45 seconds. American Jenna Shoemaker got her second-straight podium and third of the year, finishing third in 1:57:49.
For Peirsol, it was sweet redemption after a bike crash forced her out of her first ITU style race last weekend at the PATCO Championship in Oklahoma City. And she once again proved that she is going to be one of the top swimmers on the international circuit for years to come. Peirsol exited the water first in 17-flat, gaining more than a minute on the next competitor and more than two minutes on McIlroy. She gave up some time on the bike and was unable to hold off the strong running Kiwi over the final 10k run.
Jennifer Spieldenner was the next American in fifth, finishing with a time of 2:01:11.
In the men’s race, New Zealander Callum Millward was the overall winner, turning in a time of 1:43:17 to edge Collington by three seconds. Martin Van Barneveld of New Zealand was third in 1:43:45.
Collington and Millward were neck and neck for the entire race. They exited the water just one second apart, turned in the exact same time for T1, were four seconds apart after the 40k bike leg, and each ran the final 10k in 30:30.
Brian Fleischmann was the next American to finish, earning fifth place in 1:44:52.
