Despite a drastically reduced prize offering from the former Hy-Vee Triathlon—which at point offered more than $1 million—the newly-created Des Moines Triathlon welcomed a top-notch professional field, with athletes competing for their share of the $20,000 prize purse. Ultimately it was two non-drafting, Olympic-distance veterans in Americans Cameron Dye and Sarah Haskins who walked away with the victories and $4,000 each.
Dye put together an 18:12 swim, a 52:21 bike and a 35:51 run to easily earn the victory in 1:47:48. American TJ Tollakson, who calls Des Moines home, was second in 1:49:53, with veteran Greg Bennett (AUS) rounding out the top three in 1:50:21.
Haskins, who has battled injury must of this season, used a 19:19 swim, a 59:55 bike and a 39:26 run to take the win in 2:00:28. Three-time Ironman world champion Mirinda Carfrae, who decided to compete in this shorter, U.S.-based race instead of last weekend’s Ironman 70.3 World Championship, posted the fastest 10K of the women (37:19) to finish second at 2:02:47. American Laura Bennett, a two-time Olympian, was third in 2:03:19.
