Australia’s Greg Bennett and the United States’ Kelly Williamson showed off their short-course speed, taking the wins at a shortened Ironman 70.3 Muncie on Sunday. Participants were informed at the athlete briefing that the race would be shortened from a half-Ironman to near Olympic-distance (1-mile swim, 30-mile bike and 6.2-mile run) due to anticipated temperatures in the 100s.

Bennett, who is arguably the most successful triathlete of all-time at non-drafting Olympic-distance events, relied on his short-course experience to turn in a 20:50 swim, a 1:03:13 bike and a 33:36 run to take the 2:00:24 win. Australia’s Josh Amberger finished second, with American Joe Umphenour rounding out the podium in third.

In the women’s race, it was Williamson turning in impressive splits in the swim (21:37), bike (1:10:34) and run (35:48) to earn the overall 2:10:53 victory and beat out two former 70.3 world champions. Great Britain’s Jodie Swallow, who was also the victim of a shortened race at Boise 70.3 due to cold conditions, earned second. Former Ironman world champ Mirinda Carfrae nabbed the third spot.
