Ambrose, Mitchell Win Ironman Australia

While this year’s Ironman Australia event didn’t feature its usual deep pro fields, it did showcase an exciting race. In the end it was Australia’s Paul Ambrose and Michelle Mitchell who took the victories.
Ambrose led off of the bike and held off a fast-running Tim Berkel (AUS) to take the win in 8:17:38. Berkel’s 2:47:20 marathon gave him second in 8:21:11. It was an Australian sweep, with Jason Shortis finishing third.
The women’s pro race featured three athletes. It was a close race between Mitchell, Australia’s Nicole Ward and the United States’ Hillary Biscay until T2. Mitchell’s 3:08:38 marathon gave her the victory in 9:34:57. Ward finished second, with Biscay rounding out the podium in third.
