The World Triathlon Corporation, owners of the Ironman triathlon series, has used the week leading up to the Ironman World Championship to announce the introduction of a new Olympic-distance triathlon series.
The series will be called the 5150 Triathlon Series. The name comes from the total distance of the race equaling 51 kilometers (1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run). Aside from the announcement of the new series, the press release acknowledges that the organization has joined forces with several high-profile Olympic-distance races. The most notable additions include the Miami International Triathlon, the St. Anthony’s Triathlon, Memphis in May Triathlon, Nautica New York City Triathlon and the Hy-Vee Triathlon. The series finale will take place in Clearwater, Florida on the same weekend as the current Ironman 70.3 World Championship race. It is unclear at this point if the race will accompany the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, or if the 70.3 race will be moved to a different location.
