The world’s largest collection of paratriathletes is expected to be in action at the 2010 Accenture USA Paratriathlon National Championship, scheduled for Sunday, July 18 as a part of the New York City Triathlon.
A record total of more than 70 paratriathletes is expected to compete in New York City with national championships and Team USA spots for the 2010 ITU Paratriathlon World Championship on the line in six different paratriathlon categories. Additionally, athletes will compete in USA Triathlon’s new Physically Challenged Division, which helps meet the needs of emerging populations of paratriathletes.
“USA Triathlon is thrilled to once again work with the New York City Triathlon to host our USA Paratriathlon National Championship,” said Jeff Dyrek, USAT’s national events director. “The growth of this event is exciting to see, and we’re looking forward to another outstanding race.”
In order to qualify for Team USA for the ITU Paratriathlon World Championship in Budapest, Hungary, on Sept. 8-12, athletes must compete in the national championship wave and must cover the Olympic-distance (1.5k-40k-10k) course in less than four hours. Visit usatriathlon.org for more information on the qualification process.
Six defending world champions are slated to race in New York City: Megan Fisher (TRI-5, Missoula, Mont.), Ivonne Mosquera (TRI-6, Midland, Mich.), Matt Perkins (TRI-2, Boise, Idaho), Sarah Reinertsen (TRI-2, San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), Aaron Scheidies (TRI-6, Seattle, Wash.) and J.P. Theberge (TRI-5, Carlsbad, Calif.).
A total of 10 defending national champions will return to the Big Apple looking for a repeat victory. In addition to Mosquera, Perkins, Scheidies and Theberge, Robin Caruso (TRI-4, Ridgefield, Conn.), Minda Dentler (TRI-1, New York, N.Y.), Sandy Dukat (TRI-2, Denver, Colo.), Beth Price (TRI-3, Spanish Fort, Ala.), Joel Rosinbum (TRI-4, Portland, Ore.) and Oscar Sanchez (TRI-1, La Mesa, Calif.) will look for back-to-back titles.
The entire roster of the 2010 USA Paratriathlon National Team will be in action in New York.
The USA Paratriathlon National Championship is the first of three events that comprise the 2010 USA Paratriathlon Race Series. The other two stops are the Aug. 28 Chicago Triathlon and the Sept. 12 Malibu Triathlon.
