Two major Cleveland-area triathlons, the Cleveland Triathlon and the Greater Cleveland Triathlon, are set to both take place this Sunday, August 8th. Both race organizers claim to have kept with their traditional dates, but this is the first time the two have fallen on the same day.
Anyone participating in a triathlon in the Cleveland area this weekend probably should double-check that registration.
Is it for the Cleveland Triathlon?
Or the Greater Cleveland Triathlon?
Because both take place Sunday, with one word distinguishing the events that will occur at the same time about 25 miles apart.
In a scheduling quirk, both triathlons managed to inadvertently book the same date. Organizers of both events said that they stuck with the traditional date of their triathlons, but somehow this is the first conflict. The Cleveland Triathlon, in its 24th year with a downtown course, typically schedules its race for the first weekend in August, according to event president Jack Caress. And the Greater Cleveland Triathlon, in its eighth year, accepted what North Coast Multisports’ Mickey Rzymek said is its typical slot at Mentor Headlands State Park.
