Triathlete Suffers Cardiac Arrest During NYC Triathlon

The swimmer wasn’t breathing when lifeguards pulled him from the Hudson River and resuscitated him.

A triathlete’s trek was cut short on Sunday morning during the New York City Triathlon.

EMS responders and event staff pulled a man in his early 50s out the Hudson River near W. 99th St. after he went into cardiac arrest during the swimming portion of the triathlon.

A lifeguard said the swimmer’s eyes rolled back into his head and he became unconscious.

“The swimmer was blue, he was not breathing, he was in bad shape. But thankfully he’s OK,” said Cary Epstein, head of the triathlon’s lifeguards.
