David Thompson and Rebeccah Wassner each scored their third victory in Philadelphia on Sunday over a record pro field at the Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon presented by Suzuki. Sunday’s Olympic-distance race capped off a weekend of multisport events including a sprint distance triathlon, two day multi sport expo, Kids Fun Runs and Kids Duathlon on Saturday.
In the men’s pro race, John Kenney was first out of the water besting the field with a time of 15:42 but it was Andrew Yoder who made up significant ground on the bike and held a solid lead coming out of T2. Defending champ Thompson was second into T2 and had to overcome a three minute gap to catch Yoder. The run played out exactly as it did in 2008 as Thompson was able to catch and pass Yoder with 1.5 miles to go and pulled away for the victory in 1:49:52 — a new course record — exactly 1:00 ahead of Yoder. Kenny rounded out the podium in third. The win was Thompson’s second consecutive and third all-time at Philly.
In the women’s field Rebeccah Wassner won her third consecutive Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon title with a time of 2:02:22. Wassner finished 1:22 ahead of second place finisher Kerry Spearing. Margaret Shapiro rounded out the podium taking third place.
On Saturday, James Burns from Landenberg, PA and Diane Rogers, Riverton, NJ won the men’s and women’s divisions of the Sprint distance event.
Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon presented by Suzuki has staked its claim as one of the top triathlons in the U.S. Founded in 2005, the race has grown from a one day event into a weekend triathlon festival with three days of competition and activities. For more information, visit Phillytri.com.
