According to several European news sources, a Hungarian man has been arrested in the alleged murder of a New Zealand triathlete that competed in the ITU World Championship age group race.
The 33-year-old suspect has denied carrying out the knife attack, deputy chief of Budapest police Valter Fulop told reporters. The 48-year-old victim, a New Zealand-Ecuadorian dual national, had been found bleeding from knife wounds before dawn on Sunday in a Budapest street noted for its night life.
The man, who has been named in New Zealand media as Warwick John White, died shortly after being transferred to hospital.
The victim had fallen into an argument with a prostitute and was subsequently stabbed by the suspect, who had been waiting nearby, Fulop said.
