Brown, Shiver Lead U.S. in San Francisco USA Triathlon Elite race series event.

Canadians Sarah-Anne Brault and Matthew Sharpe edged American runners-up Kaitlin Shiver and Ethan Brown to top the podium Saturday at the San Francisco Triathlon at Treasure Island, the third of five events in the 2011 USA Triathlon Elite Race Series.

Brault posted a time of 2 hours, 7 minutes, 51 seconds in the women’s Olympic-distance event to best Shiver, who finished in 2:08:06, by 15 seconds. Julie Ertel, a 2008 U.S. Olympian and a sixth-place finisher at this event a year ago, closed out the podium in 2:10:38.

Brault and Shiver were within a second of one another on both the swim and bike, but Brault earned the win on the run with a 37:22 10k split, 16 seconds quicker than Shiver. Shiver captured her second straight runner-up finish in the Elite Race Series after also grabbing second two weeks ago in Monroe, Wash. Lauren Goss placed 10th for her third straight top-10 finish in the series and her fifth top-10 in a Pan American Cup this year.

On the men’s side, Sharpe broke the tape in 1:56:42, just ahead of Brown, who grabbed second in 1:56:52. Costa Rica’s Leonardo Chacon placed third in 1:57:23.
