New Zealand Ironman champ will use open water race as tune up for remainder of season.
New Zealand Ironman champion Samantha Warriner will compete in the 2.6km Sand to Surf ocean swim at Mount Maunganui on Saturday.
The former Olympic triathlete, who won her first ironman title in Taupo earlier this month, will use the swim as training ahead of her departure for the United States next week in a bid to qualify for the World Ironman Championships in Hawaii in October.
“It offers me the chance to just swim as fast as I can, normally I am conserving my energy for the bike and run but I am looking forward to just going all out and see how stack up against the other swimmers,” the 39-year-old said.
Charlotte Webby is back to defend her crown, while series leader Cara Baker will sit out the Mount Maunganui race.
