Ultra runner and paratriathlete is the first-ever female amputee to finish the Badwater Ultramarathon.
Amy Palmiero-Winters this week became the first female amputee to successfully run the 135-mile Badwater Ultramarathon.
Runners have 48 hours to finish the race from the lowest point below sea level in the United States to the highest point in the continental U.S. Palmiero-Winters, 38, whose left leg was amputated below the knee, ran from Death Valley, Calif., to 14,505-foot Mount Whitney in 41 hours, 26 minutes, 42 seconds. She crossed the finish line early Wednesday morning.
Air temperature sometimes exceeded 130 degrees, and the temperature in Palmiero-Winters’ prosthesis below her knee hit 160 degrees.
Oswaldo Lopez of Madera, Calif., won the race in 23:41:40.
Palmiero-Winters, who lives with her two children in Hicksville, N.Y., first attempted Badwater in 2010. She did not finish after a leg bone broke through the skin inside her prosthesis.
