Switzerland’s Nicola Spirig will undergo surgery on her left hand as the result of injuries suffered during a bike crash at Saturday’s World Triathlon Series Abu Dhabi race, Swiss news site Blick.ch is reporting.
Spirig, the 2012 London Olympic gold medalist, went down in a crash about 500 meters before T2 (watch the video here). She managed to make it through transition, but had to pull out on the run.
“Thank you all for the nice notes! tried my best after crash to finish but not today. in hospital now checking hand,” Spirig tweeted after the crash.
Blick.ch reports that the result was “multiple fractures in the left back of the hand.”
“The left hand back three metacarpal bones are broken,” Nicola says. “I will undergo surgery on Monday, with a plate, the bones are screwed.”
Spirig is confident she will be back and healthy in time for the 2016 Rio Olympics. “At the moment I still believe in Rio,” she says.
