Newspaper Reports Virginia Berasategui Tests Positive For Banned Substance

A Spanish newspaper is reporting that Virginia Berasategui tested positive for a banned substance after her win at the Bilbao Triathlon in Bilbao, Spain back on May 18. She finished the half-iron distance race in a time of 4:49:23.
According to El Mundo, Berasategui was notified of the positive result on Friday, June 14 and asked for a “counter analysis.” The substance has not been revealed at this time. She has yet to comment publicly on the news.
Berasategui is 37 years old and hails from the Basque region of Spain. She has several big victories to her name, including two wins at Ironman Lanzarote (2004 and 2005) and two wins at the Wildflower Long Course Triathlon (2009 and 2010). She has finished third (2009) and fourth (2010) at the Ironman World Championship. She did not compete in Kona in 2012. Berasategui has said 2013 will be her last season competing as a professional triathlete.
