Two-time Ironman World Champion Mirinda Carfrae will race the inaugural Challenge Atlantic City on June 29 as the cyclist on part of a relay team for Race2Rebuild, an athlete-founded organization that was started to help families rebuild their homes after 2012’s Hurricane Sandy.
“Thousands of families in the New York and New Jersey area are still recovering from Hurricane Sandy, including Atlantic City,” Carfrae said in a press release. “I’m racing with Race2Rebuild because I know it will help make a difference in the community’s recovery and I hope everyone will support the cause.”
Carfrae’s team and another racing trio that includes Tara Costa of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” have a $25,000 fundraising campaign—the cost of rebuilding a home—with the nonprofit Rebuilding Together. The teams are both rounded out by New York City-area triathletes including Darbi Roberts, Jackie Fahey, James Cunningham and Juan Jo Frias. Profile Design stepped up with financial support and gear for the teams. Athletes will have the opportunity to meet the family and actively help with the rebuilding process following the race.
“Part of our mission is to find a way to channel our training and our resolve into than something bigger than ourselves, and we’re grateful that Challenge has given us that platform,” says Race2Rebuild President Sarah Hartmann. “For us, Rinny is the biggest name in the sport, she’s completely inspiring as an athlete, and to have someone who is at the top of her game in the sport of triathlon representing R2R and what we stand for—which is racing to help families come home—we couldn’t be more proud or inspired ourselves to continue to race for our mission and for our cause.”
Carfrae’s fiancé Tim O’Donnell is also racing on a relay team for charity, and auctioned off slots for the bike (winning bid of $2,400) and run ($2,225), with the money raised going towards Team RWB.
