ESPN reports that this was the eighth death of the 2013 triathlon season.
A Las Vegas man died of unknown causes during the swim leg of the Pumpkinman Triathlon at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Nevada on Saturday morning, National Park Service and local authorities have confirmed.
Christie Vanover, public affairs officer for the recreation area, told ESPN.com that the man was spotted at 8:55 a.m. by a kayaker on the swim course, who summoned park rangers in a patrol boat. CPR was administered on the boat and the man was transported to the Boulder City (Nev.) Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:30 a.m.
KSNV-TV reported that the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner identified the man as 59-year-old Patrick Hayden. An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday.
