After earning Australia’s Sportstar of the Year award, Chris “Macca” McCormack donates winnings to breast cancer charity.

After winning the 2010 Leader Tynan Honda Sportstar of the Year award in his native Australia last Friday, Chris McCormack donated his winnings to a cause close to his heart.

An emotional McCormack handed over his winner’s check for an undisclosed amount to Aussie cricket legend Glenn McGrath, founder of the McGrath Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to raising money for breast cancer awareness and support. The foundation honors McGrath’s wife, Jane, who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2008.

‘‘I lost my mother to breast cancer when I first won the [Olympic distance world title] in 1997,’’ McCormack said. ‘‘It was very tough at the time. It is fabulous to see what great work Glenn and his organization are doing.”

Handing over his first-place check to McGrath on stage, he said, ‘‘I want this to go to you guys.’’
