The northwest Indiana race has opened registration for the June 6 event.
In the early days of the Chicago-area triathlon scene, Leon’s was one of the biggies. Pros came from all over the country to northwest Indiana for the flat, fast course and national TV coverage. After a 15-year hiatus, the race returns with an Olympic-distance race on June 6.
Race organizer Leon Wolek promises that the triathlon held at Wolf Lake Park in Hammond, Ind., will be very spectator friendly—and fast. “We were always known as a fast triathlon,” Wolek says. “And it’s still going to be that way. But we’ve also been able to make it much easier for people to watch the race. I think people are just going to be amazed at how much they’ll be able to see from the park.”
Online registration for Leon’s Triathlon is now open, and athletes can receive $20 off the entry fee until April 10. And registered triathletes will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a Trek bike and one of two Versa Climbers.
This year’s race will once again feature a portion of the bike course on a six-lane highway—and you can expect to watch the event again on television.
